It’s my Birthday

Today! I am so excited. Red Toes kept telling me that it is my birthday but I didn’t know what that meant. It is like Christmas all over again. Yippee!

I was woken up early by Red Toes who started singing a song “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Bithday to you, Happy Birthday dear Benji, Happy Birthday to you. One today Benji” she said.

She then let me jump on the giant bed. “Wow, it really must be my Birthday” I say. Just as I was settling down, she produced a bag and placed it beside me.

“Oh, oh this smells good, I can smell Grandma too” I am wagging like crazy. When out of the bag pops a ball. “A new ball, Wowee” I say as I chase the ball across the bed. I then come back to sniff the bag again.

“What’s this…a bit of card to chew? Thanks, I love card” Red Toes pulls a wool scarf from the card and pops it over my head. “Oooh this is smart”I say.

I skip across the bed to the bag again and another ball old out. I am so happy 2 new balls to play chase with. Red Toes pulls out a card with an orange thing strapped to it, I am not sure what this is for. “What is it?” I ask. “I will show you later Mr Benji”

I must be growing up fast “Mr Benji” never been called that before.

I went back to the bag to have another sniff, it looks like it is now empty. I think that my favourite present is the bag, I used my teeth to chew it on the corners. I managed to get my head right inside and grab the bottom with my teeth. Red Toes started laughing as I had the bag on my head, it was very funny.

Of course bag was my favourite, that was until Red Toes showed me that treats are stored in the orange toy and it is a new puzzle for me to work out how to retrieve the treats. I love treats!

Red Toes had to go to work, I don’t like work, especially on my Birthday. That said I am a very lucky boy to have all these presents. Do you like my new scarf?

I’m a Dog not a Rabbit!

On Saturday afternoons we always walk down the hill to the big field called Bliss Mill. I love this field as I always meet lots of dogs and we can go in different directions to get back home.  Red Toes always keeps me guessing as to which direction we are going so it is always fun.

Last Saturday I was skipping along between different hummocks of grass, sniffing away to see which dogs have been to the field. I had run quite some distance in front of Red Toes because she walks so slowly and I can go very fast when I am off the lead.

All of a sudden Red Toes started to shout ” Benji come, come now, come on boy.”  I looked up from the mound of mud that I was sniffing to check what an earth was going on. She was running towards me.

“This is strange” I said. “Is this a new game of chase?”

She was still shouting and running when I noticed a large dark shadow moving towards me in the distance.

“Ooh what is that” I said. I turned my head and see the shadow is getting closer. Red Toes is now screaming at me “Come Benji, quickly now.”

I start to run as fast as I can, I don’t know what the shadow is but it is coming closer very quickly and I can tell by Red Toes voice that the shadow is bad.

“I’m coming, what is it , what is it?” I start to run as fast as I can back to Red Toes. I can see the shadow getting closer. I’m now really scared.

Red Toes is running, I am running.

“Red Toes help” I shout. The shadow is nearly reaching me.

I run harder, I am almost at Red Toes. She bends down with the lead in her hand and clips me right in just as this enormous bird flies right over our heads.

“What was that” I whimper, I’m shaking all over. She picks me up in her arms and I know that I am now safe.

“Oh my god Benji that was too close.” she says.

Once I stop shaking she explains “It looks like a Red Kite, they normally eat mice and moles. He must of thought that you were a nice fluffy rabbit.”

“A Rabbit, I’m not a Rabbit. I’m a dog!”

“Unfortunately they can pick up small dogs by mistake and fly off with them. We need to be more careful in the fields.”

“You saved me Red Toes” I said giving her a big lick.

I stayed on the lead for the rest of the way home just in case anyone else thought I was a fluffy rabbit.

Just to prove I’m a dog not a Rabbit!

Another new Fad?

Before Christmas Red Toes decided to complete 100 days of no bread in an effort to lose some pounds. She definitely achieved her target of no bread. That said and I can’t speak for Red Toes but I am sure that I put on extra pounds on account of over eating cake and biscuits. I am glad that Fad is over.

Red Toes now has a watch that tracks her every move. So every hour on the hour she gets up from the computer and walks up the stairs, round the living room, round the kitchen, round the living room and back down the stairs. She squeal with delight when her tracker buzzes on her wrist.

I on the other hand am left wondering what an earth this new fad is all about and how it is going to impact me?

The good news is that she has been taking me out on really long walks. I am meeting so many new friends in the big field at the bottom of the hill.  This morning we went down the hill and I met Poppy a 2 year old Lab. I chased and chased in big circles. Eventually I wore her down and caught her. I was very happy with myself.

I showed Red Toes a new route that I found with Grandpa, so we went up the field with lots of tufty grass so I could jump and jump through the hills of grass. So much fun. I love crispy grass now it is so much nicer than wet grass.

The bad news and to be honest all these long walks are wearing me out. I am thoroughly exhausted and have to take big naps in the afternoon. If only Red Toes would let me!

I was just drifting off to sleep when I heard the watch buzz this afternoon. Keep your eyes closed I told myself, don’t move, perhaps she will forget that you are here.

No it was too late. ‘Come on Benji the watch says we need to go on a walk.’ she tells me.

‘No Red Toe’s you go on your own, I’m too tired go on another walk.’ I wimper.

‘The watch says you have to walk, not me’ I puffed.

Before I knew it, I had my harness on and we are at the front door ready to go out into the cold again. I am not sure how long this fad is going to be for but I am not sure I like everything about it.

Red Toes has now started talking about New Years Resolutions. Instead of 100 days of no bread she is announced yesterday 100 days of no biscuits, sweets and cake.

‘How about that Benji? 100 Days of no biscuits.’ she said.

‘Does that mean no biscuits to dip in our tea?’ I quizzed.

‘Yes correct, no biscuits at break time.’

‘Does that apply to Digestives?’

‘Does that apply to Ginger Nuts?’

‘They are both biscuits, so no Digestives or Ginger Nuts’ she said.

‘But I love Ginger Nuts’ I said as I walked off in a huff to my mat. ‘I don’t want to give them up.’

‘It sounds like a really bad idea to me.’ I barked.

I don’t like the sound of this at all. So if you see me walking down the street, please bring me a Ginger Nut as Red Toes is having another funny fad.

Got it cracked!

Last week I was sent away with my naughtiness of chewing carpets, shoes and other household goods and of course making Red Toes very tired with my night time antics.

On the trip to Grandpa’s he stopped at the dog shop. Grandpa got me some special treats. They came out of a crinkly packet and were white not like normal doggy treats. I had one with my lunch and one later at night.  ‘To be honest they didn’t taste great but hey ho its food.’

After having one of my special treats strange things started to happen. My legs found it difficult to walk in a straightline, my eyelids  became so heavy and I started to yawn. I slept and slept. I slept so much Grandpa had to wake me up in the morning.

I had a wonderful holiday,  walking with Grandma leaving little Benji smells for the dogs of Eydon. I waved my tail at everyone I met “Hello, I’m Benji pleased to meet you.”

I wanted to make sure that I got back to Red Toes and my own house as soon as possible, so I was the best behaved puppy you would ever love to meet.

Two great nights sleep and I was feeling totally calm, relaxed and refreshed, finally Red Toes came. “Hello, I love you, I miss you” I said as I licked all over her face. “Please let me come home” I said. She packed my bag and bed into the car and home we went.

I ran round house checking it for smells, it smelled like…”home.”

The first night I slept like an angel, Red Toes was so happy with me, little did she know that I had finally cracked it. Everything had come together after weeks of practice.

The following night at bed time Red Toes left the kitchen door ajar. I fell asleep myself as I waited for Red Toes to sleep.

When I woke it was very dark, so I moved very quiety to the edge of the kitchen, I ran, then I jumped at the handle and I couldn’t believe it, the door swung open first time. I was free at last. I ran round the living room with Dog in my mouth so we could have a proper adventure. I chased a bit of foil that I found. Then I chewed on a stick. I wandered behind the curtains to see who was in the street, it was empty.

“This is not too much of an adventure Dog, what shall we do?”

“I know lets get Red Toes” I said.

I crept quietly down the stairs towards the bedrooms. Yippee Red Toes’ door was open enough for me to wiggle through. I jumped quietly onto the box that holds jumpers and waited.

Red Toes moved around in a circle to face the other direction. The room was very quiet.  I balanced carefully on the box my paw hovering over the gap. If I land too heavily I will wake Red Toes. I had to get the landing perfect. I waited a minute, I stretched and gently landed on the giant bed.

I curled up in ball on the edge of the bed and slept for a while, when I realised in all the excitement I was finding it difficult to hold it in. I needed to do ‘my business’ there was nothing for it but to wake Red Toes.

“Surprise Red Toes” I said, as I jumped on her chest. “Its me Benji” I wagged.

“How on earth did you get here Benji?” She said

If only puppies could talk, I could tell you all about it.

The Giant Bed

I seem to be driving Red Toes crazy lately, my frst tactic to drive her crazy was throwing my best temper tantrums to get my own way.

It all started about 2 weeks ago. I don’t know why but I don’t like to sleep in my bed anymore. As you may recall me-dogI have always slept in my bed with Dog in the kitchen ever since I came to live with Red Toes.

To be honest I just want to sleep on the giant bed with Red Toes, I don’t like it when we are apart.

So one night I devised a plan. If I make as much noise as possible in the kitchen Red Toes will come and get me and I will get to sleep in the giant bed.

So after Red Toes put me to bed, I wait a short while and then I ran.

I ran at the cupboards, I ran at the door, I ran across the floor. I started to tell her “Red Toes come get me.” After about 20 mins I was exhausted so I curled up on my bed and went to sleep.

The next night I decided to try again. After Red Toes left me in bed, I ran at the cupboards, I ran at the door, I ran across the floor. Still she didn’t come. So I started to howl and I ran again at the cupboard and the door and right across the floor. This time she came.

“Yeah, take me to the giant bed” I said. Red Toes cuddled me in her arms and gently rocked me. It made me so tired I fell alseep. I woke up to find I was still in my own bed. “Well that didn’t quite go to plan” I told Red Toes when she came for me in the morning.

The next night I tried again nothing happened. No Red Toes to the rescue. I tried again the following night and the following night to no avail.

“I need to up my game” I said to myself. That day I made sure I got some extra sleep in the day so that I could put my plan into action. When Red Toes put me to bed and stroked my head, I smiled and said “night night see you soon Red Toes.”

I ran at the cupboards, I ran at the door, I ran across the floor, then again and again. Now I stopped and waited for Red Toes to fall asleep then when the clock struck 1:00 am I ran at the cupboards, I ran at the door, I ran across the floor. I howled, I cried. I ran across the floor, then again.

The door open a crack and I ran at Red Toes howling as I went. She scooped me up in her arms and gave me a big cuddle “Oh my Benji whats the problem” she said. I buried my head in her hair.

“Everything is okay now” I said, smiling as I curled up on the giant bed beside Red Toes.

The Sleepless Night

It was around the time of Halloween, we kept getting strange visitors at the door. They came as bats, mummies, vampires but always with fangs. I was very scared of them and gave them a good barking at, before licking them and wagging my tail.

It was a bit of an eerie night and when I went to bed. Red Toes forgot to close one of the kitchen blinds, light beamed across the kitchen flooding it with shadows.

I closed my eyes as tight as I possibly could but I couldn’t sleep. I turned myself around and around and then around again to avoid the light but it still pierced through my eyelids.

Up I got to look at the light thinking “boy the moon is bright tonight.” When I realised that the moon was not the problem. Red Toes had fixed the lights in the porch. First one lamp was not working, then they both didn’t work. Now I had both lamps beaming fully across my bed through the open blind.

“How will I sleep?” I said to myself. Angry with Red Toes for leaving me in this predicament I pounced on my bed and it moved slightly across the floor. “Aah that’s it I said.

I pulled and tugged at the bed until it moved across the floor. “That’s better, now for a good nights sleep.” I curled myself up into a ball. I closed my eyes tightly and tried to relax.  I turned myself around and around and then around again to avoid the light but it still pierced through my eyelids. It was no use! The light was still beaming across my bed.

I pounced and pulled and tugged at my bed until it was as far away from the light as possible. I curled myself up into a ball. I put my paws over my eyes and tried to relax.  I turned myself around and around and then around again to avoid the light but it really was no use.

I started to pace the floor hoping that Red Toes would hear that I was awake. Should I bark? I thought. Then she will definitely come and get me. Perhaps I can get to sleep on the giant bed instead?  I did a little growl to test the water…nothing.  I think I’m on my own on this one.

I looked at my bed then it struck me. If I put the cushion over my head it just might shield me from the light. I used my teeth to pull out the cushion, one, two, three and it was out.

Now how do I get this over my head? I crawled as low as I could to the ground and tried to burrow my nose under the cushion. All that happened was I shoved the cushion towards the bed.

Next I tried to flip the pillow in the air by sliding my paws underneath it and one, two three lift, then shoved my head under a quickly as possible. It worked but it was not quite good enough.

Let’s go again I thought. One, two, Three. I lifted the cushion as high as possible, while burrowing and crawling forward as fast as I could. I couldn’t believe it, it had worked, I actually had the cushion fully over my head.

Worried that the cushion would fall I slowed walked towards my bed and lowered my tired and weary body to the ground. I closed my eyes and started to relax.

Next thing I know Red Toes said “Morning my Benji, what you doing over there?” If only, I could tell her!

The Aunties

This summer has been really amazing. I have met so many people across the UK, I thought I would give a big shout to all my new aunties that helped me have adventures over the last 6 months.

Aunt Julie – who lives next door. She feeds me on a Wednesday when Red Toes is at work. I get to play with Dora the Rabbit, Bailey and the slow shell when I visit their house. She feeds me lots of treats.

Aunt Diana – who lives next door too. She feeds me on a Thursday when Red Toes is at work. I get to go on long walks with Diana. I always have a good sleep on a Thursday as I am exhausted.

Aunt Judy – who lives across the street. She makes clothes out of wool. I get to chew the wool before it gets made into a jumper, so everyone has a bit of Benji with them.

Aunt Lucy – she keeps me looking fabulous by giving me a hair cut every couple of weeks. Without Lucy I would not be able to see.

Aunt Rachel – I went on holiday to stay with Aunt Rachel and Red Toes. I had so much fun chasing Max and Shelby.  One day Shelby walked beside me to protect me from Max as he was trying to jump on me when I was doing my morning “business”. Then he started to shout at me so Shelby picked me up by the neck and moved me out of the way. I love Shelby.  I also met a small human called Benjamin, he has the same name as me but not quite. Perhaps he is named after me?

Benjamin took me on my very first train ride. I was a bit scared as Red Toes wasn’t there to help me. Luckily I managed to get a seat all of my own.

Aunt Leigh – She took me to the pub with Red Toes and Aunt Rachel. At first I didn’t understand Aunt Leigh, she has a strange accent. She lives all the way in Australia. She give me lots of cuddles and every time I wagged my tail she gave me another treat. As you can imagine I wagged my tail a lot. She looked after me when Red Toes was at work. She helped us get onto the train and navigate through all those people.

Aunt Debbie – She lives very far, it took us ages to get there.

benji-finleyThis was my longest trip in the car. I met Finley who was a bit grumpy that my bed was next to his. I tried to get up the stairs to Red Toes but she built a barrier of cushions so I couldn’t climb any higher.

When Red Toes and Aunt Debbie went zipping I stayed with Uncle Pip.

He took me on the longest walk ever..I chased and chased Finley and Jake….I was really exhausted. I slept all the way home.

Of course I must not forget Grandma who chases me round the table and walks me every time I visit.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone?  Thank you to all my Aunties for helping me have an amazing first summer full of fun, cuddles and lots of treats.

I truly am a very lucky boy!

Where’s your Red Toes?

I always know when it is a Sunday. We go for a really long walk over the fields and I get to get absolutely filthy and splash around in the stream. Boy I love Sundays.

This Sunday was very unusual. Red Toes and I took a different route. We walked all the way past the Vets right to the edge of town. Right beside the petrol station – that’s how far. Just as we couldn’t go any further we found a a gap in the wall with a kissing gate.

Once inside it was a big forest. Red Toes took my lead off so I could explore. There I was head down sniffing in the under growth when I smelt something in the air. Another dog. He was sat there just looking at me with his head cocked and a puzzled expression.

“Hello, what’s your name?” I said.

Not the actual puppy – too clean

“It’s Harry, what are you doing in my forest?” he said.

“My Red Toes has brought me here to explore” I said. “Can I play chase with you?”

We chased and chased all the time following Red Toes along the edge of the field. Harry and I had a great game. We are the same age. When we got to the edge of the field Red Toes said “go home puppy you cannot come with us!”

Still Harry followed us so I asked him “Where is your Red Toes?”

“What is a Red Toes?” Harry asked.

I had to take a minute to think how to explain as it was a difficult question to answer. “Red Toes is my human, she looks after me and gives me food, treats and lots of cuddles, if I didn’t have my Red Toes I would not be a happy puppy.”

Harry looked quite sad “Oh that sounds lovely, I which I had a Red Toes.”

Red Toes now has a bit of a frown on her face, she walks back across the field to a wooden house in the woods. “Go home puppy you cannot come with us!”

There was no one in at the wooden house. So we turned around and went right back across the field. Still Harry followed us. When we came across a track by a cottage Red Toes told Harry “Go home puppy you cannot come with us!”

As we went up into the next field still Harry followed us. What happened next was unbelievable Red Toes is trying to give my treats to Harry! I wagged my tail at Red Toes and got a treat “Okay now you can give one to Harry” I said.

Harry would not take a treat from Red Toes. “I think I like your Red Toes” he said. “Do you think she will keep me?”

Now Red Toes is actually asking Harry to follow us. I walked closer to Red Toes what if Red Toes likes Harry more than me? Will she swap me for Harry? Will Harry come and stay at my house? We only have 1 big boy bed!

We finally arrive at the vets. I am worried. “I will be a good boy. I will play nicely. I will cross the road correctly. I will never eat poo again!” I tell her.

Red Toes asks the vet to take Harry to see if they can locate his owner. I told Harry as the vet took him in “Good Luck. I hope you get a new Red Toes, but this is my Red Toes and she is all mine.”
